5/31/2018 0 Comments Pilfer AcademyThis book is kind of short compared to the Tally books, but it was still kind of enjoyable. I say kind of because the whole thing felt kind of childish and while the storyline was good, it seemed kind of rushed. I guess I like more 'mature' books like Alex Rider, because they have more action and gunshots and death and blah blah, while this book has.... lasers and falling out of the sky with a parachute on. I guess it's just my opinion, though. I'd still recommend this book to a lower-level reader because this book is relatively short but not so short that they wouldn't be challenged at all.
This story's main character is George Beckett (or, as one of his teachers call him, George Bucket) and he mysteriously gets kidnapped and sent to Pilfer Academy; a school where they teach all about thieving and crime. George doesn't seem to be fit for the job, though. He's just too nice to be stealing stuff from people. He tries all sorts of wacky things like trying to get expelled, and the rest of the story I'l leave to you. I'll say 6.5/10. I would want to rate it more but this book isn't my type I guess. Sorry Lauren Magaziner..

5/23/2018 0 Comments ExtrasThere goes the last book in the Uglies series. I probably hated this book more than the others, to be honest. The ending was a total cliffhanger, and I really didn't know what happened to Aya Fuse (the main character in this book) or Tally Youngblood (the main character in the last 3 books). At least this book was different-ish from the others; this time, it revolves around this person named Aya Fuse, who is an extra. Extras aren't what they seem; it's just another name for "unpopular loser". There's face ranks and stuff, and Aya is trying to get hers up so she can be famous.
The plot of the story mainly is about the fact that Aya found this group of girls called the Sly Girls, who ride mag-lev trains and do other sorts of crazy stuff; but while they're surfing together, they find this group of inhumans (or at least, that's what they call them) hanging around in there, doing suspicious stuff. Kicking a story basically means releasing it to a bunch of people and if your story is good, then that'll get your face rank up. Aya wants to kick this story, but the Sly Girls don't agree, because they're... well, sly, so they don't want any fame at all. Aya decides to share the story and her face rank goes up by the thousands - what happens next, I'll leave for you to find out. I don't know what to give this book to be honest. I want to give it a 10/10, but at the same time I hated it so much that I wanted to give it a 6/10. At first I didn't like how the book was based off of a different character, but then later in the book I could see how this book connected itself to the previous books' events. Everything was good until the end; it's just a cliffhanger, which you all know I hate. Aya sits on her balcony or whatever and kisses her boyfriend.... then what happens? Yeah, I guess I'll just leave you to read the book yourself and see what score you would give it. 5/9/2018 0 Comments SpecialsThe covers of these books just keep getting more weirder and weirder. I wonder what my mom will think if she finds me reading one of these.
Well this book was certainly a game-changer. I liked this one more than the last 2 books I read in the series; it kept me on edge the whole book, and the ending wasn't as much of a cliffhanger as the other books. The way all the events kind of flowed together is what I really liked; it seem confusing at first, but then you get to the end of the book and THEN you realize the the events are actually related. Tally's made some.... let's say, mischievous choices in the book and it ends up turning into a full blown war. It's really unlike the modern and peaceful city of Pretties that I was used to. I always find that at the end of each book, Tally gets turned into something else; first, she's an ugly, then she's a pretty, and now she's a Special. Specials are kind of like a rumour that's going around in New Pretty Town; Tally didn't believe that they existed, and now she's one. A SPECIAL special. Tally, Shay, and some other carefully chosen people have been turned into Cutters, Dr. Cable's special invention. They turn 'icy' by cutting themselves.. I guess that's where the name comes from. And the whole book revolves around them trying to catch Smokies, runaways, and stuff like that, but then they get thrown into a much worse situation. I'd give this book a 9 out of 10. It's definitely better than the last 2 books and I'm really looking forward to the next one. 4/24/2018 0 Comments PrettiesI have to say, this book had me flabbergasted. All the ups and downs and turns to the store made it a great experience, although it still retained the boring beginning like the last book, but it wasn't as bad this time. I'll take back what I said about how the sequels aren't 'connected'; I really saw how this book was related to the last book. It still had a cliffhanger at the end, though. One pattern I noticed is that Tally always seems to be changing into something else by the end of each book; in the last one, she turned into a Pretty, and now she's a Special.
Tally is trying to form the New Smoke with her old friends and her boyfriend (ish? I can't tell) Zane. There's many things that happen along the way (which includes using a giant machine that could slice your hand off in an instant) and by the end, Tally again almost betrays the Smoke by setting off a tracker which leads the city authorities to them. The book then ends at that point. I'll give this an 8.5/10. While I do think this book was better than the old book, it had the same type of writing style and the events seem a little too similar to really paint something new in my mind, but the great storyline makes up for that. 4/16/2018 0 Comments UgliesAfter I was done reading Alex Rider, I was looking for a new series to start, and this seems to be it. The start of the book had me a little uninterested, but then everything suddenly made sense and it all came crashing down on me like a flood of water; that's the best part of a book. Everything after that became just like an Alex Rider book - action packed and it had me on my toes waiting for the next page. One thing I do have to say though; the ending is a cliffhanger, and I hate cliffhangers with all my life because it's like you're waiting to see what will happen next, then BOOM! It's the end. Even if there is a sequel to this book, I feel like sequels don't 'connect' with the ending of the first book, if that makes sense. But, I haven't read the next book yet, so who am I to judge?
The plot of this story revolves a girl named Tally Youngblood. She lives in a world where everyone is ugly - except at 16, you get a life changing operation that makes you pretty. Perfect symmetry in your face, your skin replaced to make it smooth, puffed up lips and eyes that shine. Tally was about to get her operation - until an ugly named Shay decides she doesn't want to do the operation, and runs away. The authorities give Tally a dilemma - don't say anything and never become pretty, or betray her friend. I'll give this book a 8/10. Despite the cliffhanger at the end, it was written very well and for the whole book, I could come up with an image in my mind; something that not a lot of books do. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series. 4/5/2018 0 Comments Alex Rider: Skeleton KeyThis is the last Alex Rider book I needed to read in order to be able to complete the series, and boy was it as fun and action-packed as all the other books. I like how throughout the whole book it keeps you on edge; it also sometimes leaves things hanging until the end of the book, which gives you a sense of uncertainty. At one point I actually thought Alex had died, but I found out later in the book it wasn't true; actually, one thing I've found in all the books is that Alex hovers dangerously closely to death but he somehow always manages to get out of even the stickiest situations. I also like Alex's bravery; there's some things he does in the book that I would probably never do in my life. I most likely would never be chasing down some armed terrorist with god-knows-what on his hands, but that's something that Alex seems to do a lot.
So I'll try to explain the plot of the story without giving anything important away; Alex Rider is contacted by Mi6 again, who is suspicious of a man that may have a nuclear weapon. He seems to be in possession of uranium, which when used properly can be a very deadly weapon. Alex is sent out on his mission to find this man, but not without encountering many other enemies and problems along the way. I would give this book a rating of about 7/10. Sure, it's great and leaves you on the edge of your seat all the way until the end, but there's something about all the Alex Rider books that kind of feels the same; Alex gets captured somehow, something else happens, then Alex manages to escape. Sure, I guess I'd prefer that over Alex dying, which would probably mean no more books in the series, but maybe a little variety could help. 12/1/2017 0 Comments Hatchet: A book by Gary paulsenIntroductionHatchet is a survival story by Gary Paulsen. It revolves around a boy named Brian who is stranded in the wilderness, with nothing but a hatchet that was given to him by his mother. The story is less of an action-packed book, but I still liked it. The setting is in a Canadian Wilderness; unfortunately I can't get any more descriptive than that, honestly. Brian must learn to survive by cutting trees down, making tools, and using his resources with the help of his hatchet. OverviewBrian is on a plane trip to go visit his dad; while in the middle of their trip, the pilot has a very sudden heart attack and dies. When the plane eventually crashes, Brian has to go fend for himself in the Canadian forest, full of wild animals and other creatures. He faces many challenges, such as making fires, finding food, and tending to his wounds. RatingsOverall, I think the story is very intriguing and descriptive; it doesn't have as much action packed into it as I would like, but again, that's just my own opinion. This book would be good for someone that likes survival stories, which is exactly what Hatchet is. For people that like action stories, this probably isn't for you. This book is also very short, so have a second book ready once you finish this one.
I'd say this book gets a 7/10. |
